The MOB, which stands for ‘Mac’s Own Boardriders’ was established in 2005 by a core group of local surfers from MacMasters Beach. They saw an opportunity to form a social, fun, club which allowed a way to get all the local surfers together through club surfing competitions and social events. The MOB also provides the opportunity for the more competitive surfers from the area to compete in team events for ‘The MOB’ at a Local, State and National level.

In January 2005 the 1st MOB committee was formed consisting of key members, Jeremy Cohen, Dom Wills, Chris Green, Corey Myers & Pete and Judy Moroney as well as many other helpers. The basis for the club was modelled on other clubs and contests that they had all been involved in but together they made some unique decisions to try and formulate the type of club that would be well supported at MacMasters and surrounding suburbs. These decisions included running the contests on Saturdays to allow surfers the opportunity to socialise after the day’s competition and try and eliminate contests being postponed by using the Sunday as a back-up day, as well as holding only four contest per year (one comp for each season) along with a special grommets only contest. This is different to many clubs that hold between 8 and 10 contests per year and ensures each MOB contest is a big event. The first year the MOB registered 110 members.

The MOB has always been a club that puts fun and socialising above all else but also values it’s healthy competition and tries to nurture junior surfing talent and provide an opportunity for our experienced competitors to represent the area and the club at team surfing events. In 2006 The MOB held the 1st ever ‘Kings of the Coast’ team surfing competition which involves boardriding clubs from all over the Central Coast and is now the premiere team surfing event for Central Coast clubs. The club took out the event in a dominant display in 2006 and in a way it marked the arrival of ‘The MOB’ to the rest of the Central Coast surfing community. Since then the MOB has placed 3rd, 2nd and in 2009 once again held the ‘Kings of the Coast’ trophy high with a huge win at Avoca Beach.

MacMasters Beach is a quiet, tight knit community and the MOB is now firmly entrenched as a part of that community feeling. The club has put its hand up to support other community groups and events including the MacMasters Beach SLSC, MacMasters Beach Progress Association, Garden Club and 5 Lands Walk. Pete and Judy Moroney who have been instrumental in the clubs formation and growth through fundraising and taking care of the clubs equipment have made sure that the MOB is in an excellent position to offer assistance to other groups as well as providing quality gear and resources for our surfing members.

In 2010 ‘The MOB’ is stronger than ever with around 130 members and is looking to continue its fun, surfing culture as well as maintain our competitive successes. We hope to see you there.
